How Much Do Plastics Engineers Make?

Plastics engineers usually hold a bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate degree. Salaries for these professionals may be depending on their educational background, age, industry type, and location. This video explains more about the world of Plastic Engineering:

The plastics industry is one of the largest and widest industries in the world. Since plastics can be found and used in almost any application – from household items to space and aviation materials – a lot of people have been getting jobs in this field of work.

Many tasks are entailed in the jobs of plastics engineers. From product design and development to the testing and manufacturing of these products, plastics engineers are hands-on in most of the processes required in making plastic products.

Plastic Engineering

Plastics have been produced increasingly over the years. Polymers, or plastics, can be found in almost anything – from compact discs to high-tech space applications. Since the industry keeps growing, so does the number of people working in this field. In the following video fro the University of Wisconsin-Stout, graduates of the school’s Plastics Engineering program talk about pursuing a career in product design, materials science, research and development, molding and designing tools, process simulation, experimental design, manufacturing, and quality sciences:

Roles and Responsibilities of a Plastics Engineer

Plastics engineers are responsible for designing and developing various products and materials that are made with plastics. Along with this, a plastics engineer also creates specifications, manufacturing control plans, and designs pieces and parts. Product development plays a large part in these responsibilities as he or she is also responsible for developing ways to improve existing products as well. He or she must be able to find new applications for plastics engineering by using the latest techniques and chemical combinations.

Plastic Engineering Education

Plastics play a large role in our world today. On a day to day basis, we deal with plastics in materials we choose, products we use and processes we go through to make things we need like food. Since it is so, it can be understood that there is a big demand in the industry of plastics.

Interesting is the following video in which Dr. Chris Rogers (Director of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University) explains the education theory that’s at the basis of LEGOS at the Keller Center (Princeton’s Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering):

If you are interested in being a part of this industry, you can aspire to be a plastics engineer. A plastics engineer is in charge of a wide variety of tasks from the designing of plastic products up to its manufacturing.

Plastics engineers are responsible for designing new products and improving existing ones, as well as for creating new applications for plastics. They design, process, develop and then manufacture the products, making sure that they are of the best quality they can be in. They also test and examine their products and conduct research to further knowledge of polymers.

How to become a Plastic Engineer

Are you interested in becoming a plastics engineer? Find out what it will take to join the ranks of these professionals. The following video from Pittsburgh State University offers a pretty good idea of what an education in Plastic Engineering is all about:

Plastics engineers are responsible for all of the plastic products and materials we see around today. Through research, studies, and engineering skills, they develop new plastics to be used in any number of industries. From lightweight airplane parts to computer parts to food containers, plastics play a large role in our day to day lives. If you want to become a plastics engineer, here are some suggested courses for you to take.

Plastics Engineer Education Requirements

General Education Courses

As in any bachelor’s degree course, students need to take up the first courses necessary for them to graduate. Materials engineering and plastics engineering programs require students to take courses in the liberal arts which are generally taken in the first two years of college. It may be taken together with introductory engineering courses. These general education courses may include English, speech and communications, history, philosophy, literature, and psychology.

Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering

Aerospace engineering is a field where knowledge and understanding of mathematics are very important. This field is made up of engineers who have specialized in one specific science to create a team of highly skilled experts. There are many different aspects to consider when a flight takes place, including temperature, pressure from the atmosphere, and the conditions of the actual shuttle. Each of these experts generally focuses on one aspect of the flight to ensure a safe trip for all involved.

Education

You will need to have a college degree to begin a career in aerospace engineering. You can have any degree, ranging from an advanced degree to a Ph.D. in mechanical or aerospace engineering. There are typically fewer colleges that offer the aerospace engineering program than those that offer mechanical engineering unless you are willing to relocate to attend one of these elite universities. Throughout the world, there are several excellent programs for engineers. For example, Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) is one of the most advanced colleges for those entering the aerospace program.

Parker Powers, Dallas Top 100 CEO

Parker Powers, Dallas Top 100 CEO, multiple time startup founder & RealCo Seed Fund Program Mentor, is a true mentor. Parker shares his invaluable guidance and support with budding entrepreneurs and seasoned startup veterans, whenever possible.

I recently had the amazing opportunity to expand my network to include Parker.  Unlike any other connection I have made, Parker quickly took me under his wing, via LinkedIn messaging at that, and my life is clearly changed for the better as a result.  Below is just a glimpse of the outstanding person that is Parker Powers.

What was your greatest life accomplishment? What did you learn in the process of achieving it?

You asked in the past tense, I believe my greatest professional accomplishment is always ahead of me.  This is what continues to drive me, knowing that I can be a better version of myself tomorrow and create something impactful that I am very proud…. that’s what keeps me pushing forward. Matt Reedy, USAA Executive Director of Innovation

Matt Reedy is the USAA Executive Director of Innovation and an experienced entrepreneur, having successfully co-founded and developed multiple technology startups. His enduring passion for technology and entrepreneurship led him to earn his computer science degree at Trinity and MBA at St. Mary’s. Now, those same passions have culminated in his current success, mentor status, and desire to grow San Antonio’s technology ecosystem.

What was your biggest failure? How do you cope with setbacks?

The biggest failure was my second startup, a consulting service company. It was a failure in the sense that I wound up not being able to pivot to a successful BM and stuck too long with the original BM. Ultimately, we ran out of business. Lack of ability to find new ops so that could continue one. I learned there is a fine line between being persistent and beating your head against the wall. Learning from my failure helped me cope. The ability to differentiate between the two has helped me in other ventures.

Andrew Trickett, CEO MergeVR

I recently had the opportunity to speak with one of the RealCo Seed Fund Program Mentors and leading founders in San Antonio, Andrew Trickett from MergeVR. Andrew has been a driving force for tech in San Antonio and he and his co-founder, Franklin Lyons, have grown MergeVR into a shining star within the Virtual Reality space.

What do you hope to see out of the new fund for Merge Developers?

The best case scenario is that the fund helps kick-start the development of some really cool apps that are ready to go when we launch our product. I am hoping to see things developed that I could have never imagined. Continue reading “Andrew Trickett, CEO MergeVR”
